Social Influences!

For the month of APRIL, we will analyze how various aspects of society influence (and has influenced) our government. You can not think of Donald Trump (or Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders, for that) and not see how SOCIETY and social issues influence our government. We are a nation that's supposed to be "Of the people, by the people, for the people..." so it only makes sense to see how the PEOPLE motivate those who control our republic...

CONSTITUTIONAL COMMENTARIES
Here is your eighth Constitutional Commentary link, in case you lost the handout.

Remember, your eighth CONSTITUTIONAL COMMENTARY for BILL OF RIGHTS 8-10 is due the last Thursday, April 27!

You must also include a FEDERALIST PAPER in your research. Without it you will receive a ZERO! (You should know this requirement by now - no exceptions!)

Every Monday, you will be expected to provide three paragraphs on a sheet of paper:
  • SYNOPSIS of the chapter
  • An EXPLANATION of how this fits America (if it does)
  • A paragraph explaining "So What?..." - why is this important to you? 
Here is the rubric for weekly reading compositions. (it's the same rubric used last semester)
REMEMBER - your Reading will be due each Monday (except on four day weekends - then its due on Tuesday)! We will discuss in class - make sure your answers are in FULL SENTENCES!

Political Cartoon Analysis/Creations

As mentioned last month, this assignment allows you to participate in the process of POLITICAL CARTOONS. You will be required to:
  • Analyze 6 (six) cartoons [3 from the past, 3 recent]
  • Create your own political cartoon
The rubric and assignment description sheet will be passed out in class or you can obtain another copy here

This assignment is due Wednesday, April 19th - so don't let it get away from you.
Be creative - and persuasive!

You will be researching how political cartoons have affected our nation: You will complete the project in two approaches: 


  1. RESEARCH EXISTING POLITICAL CARTOONS WRITING [25 points] You will locate 6 (six) political cartoons and provide an analysis of EACH cartoon. I should have SIX ANALYSES - one for each cartoon from each of the following time periods:
    3 (three) from the past (ONE cartoon each from each one of these periods)

       • Beginning of the nation to the Civil War (1770-1865)
       • The end of the Civil War to the Turn of the Last Century (1865-1900)
       • The Turn of the Last Century to 2014 (1900-2014)

    3 (three) political cartoons dealing with current issues (2014-present).

    You must provide a one page write up analysis (one paragraph with at least five sentences [introduction, at least three body sentences, conclusion]) explaining EACH of the six cartoons - ONE ANALYSIS from EACH of the time periods listed above:

       • a description of each cartoon (preferably, a copy of the cartoon on the top of the page - PASTE THE CARTOON INTO THE PAPER); any symbols or icons that need explanation
       • the historical setting, situation which prompted the cartoonist to draw the cartoon
       • an interpretation of how effective the imagery fits the historical setting; your analysis of the cartoon itself...

    ...in other words - do NOT just look at the cartoon and give me YOUR interpretation. RESEARCH the historical setting and ask "Why did the cartoonist draw this cartoon in their time period, during their day, at that time?" (I recommend you research the cartoonist himself and learn more about him and his background)

    RESEARCH: You will be required to research the cartoon’s setting, the cartoonist and the imagery’s meaning. All sources must be provided using MLA style. Just add the sources at the bottom of the page.
  2. CREATE YOUR OWN POLITICAL CARTOON [25 points] You will be researching an issue and drawing your own cartoon highlighting the problem and/or solution of an issue facing our nation today. THIS IS NOT AN ART CLASS so your drawing is not as important as your way of expressing the situation using jargon, symbols, text and layout - does your ONE FRAME image tell the story? You are required to research the topic.
...SO - in total, I should have SIX (6) ANALYSES of THREE (3) political cartoons from the three PAST time periods listed above (that's ONE CARTOON for EACH TIME PERIOD), and THREE (3) political cartoons from the PRESENT time period. AND I should also have YOUR OWN POLITICAL CARTOON that highlights any problem or issue you see pressing in our nation today...I should have SEVEN (7) pieces of paper handed in...

This is an AMERICAN GOVERNMENT class, so let's keep the political cartoons limited to AMERICAN CULTURE/ISSUES/PROBLEMS (both in the historical analyses and in your own design).
